Abstract
Gardens represent such a great importance to urbanism for their environmental, social and historical dimensions. In addition to their obvious integral role to the active living of cities and towns, gardens play a basic role in building up the image of architecture and urban fabric; providing a source of recreation and bringing people outdoors as well as enhanced environmental quality. In the 19th century Cairo city had been recognized by the beauty of its historical gardens and their heritage value, whose origin related to some important persons or events, Recently, the degrading visual image and deterioration of most of these gardens have been the result of a number of reasons, including the many updates, changes and different intrusions which have dramatically lead to overall urban texture degradation. Other major deterioration reasons include, but not restricted to, carelessness, unawareness and being unappreciated to the national and historical value for these gardens. Besides, non specialists have become the controllers and decision makers of garden design and conservation projects without consultations from specialists. As a result, these gardens, which represented an Egyptian civilized symbol someday, have been deteriorated. Some serious trials to keep on the track and catch this urban progress evolved, but the lack of connections with the surroundings insistently lead to gradual loss of their historical identity. This thesis introduces a wide set of guidelines and criteria to study and analyze how to conserve the urban heritage - represented in heritage gardens - as an approach to urban upgrade within areas and surrounding urbanism. Based on, and guided by, a number of previous studies and results, this research surveys and applies the ssuggested methodology and analyses of its elements and levels on one of the city inherited urban models (El Horreya Garden in El-Zamalek Island ).
