Abstract

By analysing the processes in the cathode region of high current arcs, a closed set of equations describing this region is proposed . The steenback condition of minimum cathode potential usually used in literature is found unnecessary and is replaced by the condition of balance between the flux of ions striking the cathode and the flux of atoms in the opposite direction. Effects of the presence of plasma and the random character of the field near the cathode are taken into account when calculating the electron emission from the cathode. It is found that these effects lead to a considerable increase of the emission current density. Numerical results are compared with those of previous authors and with experimental data.
