Abstract

Green Building Rating Systems (GBRSs) have spread worldwide to evaluate how buildings are related to sustainability criteria. On one hand, leadership in Energy and Environmental Design [1] was recognized to be one of the most prominent rating systems in all over the world. LEED gives importance to the energy category by giving it the highest weighting score. On the other hand, the Egyptian Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS) has been established to expand the construction of green buildings in Egypt. The governmental codes, policies and strategies in Egypt play the main role in improving several codes in the various fields of energy conservation. Furthermore, many Egyptian office buildings still need the required changes that could save more energy and lack the decisions concerning using them without negatively impact the surrounding environment. The Egyptian experiences related to energy conservation in office buildings and the application of Green Rating Systems (GRS’s) standards are considered moderate but need more focus and attention in scientific research. The purpose of this research is to identify the most applicable and effective criteria used for improving energy efficiency in office buildings, by conducting a comparative analytical study of green rating systems to identify the most important criteria for energy conservation in office buildings, as well as a comparative analysis of two office building projects, that have been certified by one of the green rating systems. By using these criteria, the researcher was able to form an approach formulating several design strategies for energy conservation that are suitable to be applied for Egyptian office buildings.
