Abstract

Egypt’s vision and many initiatives, such as the “Controlling Egyptian Urbanism and Supporting Visual Identity” initiative, seek to create a visual identity for Egypt’s governorates, to deepen the concept of national belonging, and to issue a guideline for visual identity at the level of each governorate. The visual identity of cities is produced from a set of urban, social, cultural, historical, and environmental variables. Economically, the research studies how to link the urban and visual identity of cities and express it through the entrances to cities and the urban spaces surrounding them to improve and develop the city’s local and regional image.

The research aims to prepare recommendations and a general guiding framework that supports urbanization and the visual image of the city, to design city entrances that express the city’s identity in a way that is compatible with the urban reality, to deal with various challenges, to enhance the visual image of the city and belonging to the population, to develop services, to increase investment, especially tourism, and to apply it to one of the cities in Egypt. The research methodology relies on an inductive study of the elements of urban identity and the characteristics of the visual image of city entrances in a way that expresses the local identity of the city, followed by an analytical study to devise a guiding framework for the identity of the entrances to the city of Beni Suef and the extent of integration between the city’s identity and the design of its entrances to develop it and express its identity and analysis of one of the models of entrances to the city of Beni Suef. Main (southern land entrance) and most important results and recommendations, the study concluded that urban trends in Egyptian cities depend mainly on the application of visual identity, especially at the main entrances to cities. The results show a guiding framework for designing city entrances that represents a means of expressing the visual and urban identity of the city.
