Abstract
Sea level is an essential oceanographic parameter in hydrographic surveying that is always necessary for the realization of Chart Datum (CD). The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) defines sea levels as those expected to occur under typical meteorological conditions, regardless of any possible combination of astronomical conditions. The current research focuses on analysing the observed sea level in Damietta Harbor, using two sets of sea-level records obtained from two sensors: a pressure sensor and a radar sensor. These records were collected from a tide gauge station located at Damietta Harbor from July 1, 2019, to March 2, 2020. Furthermore, harmonic analysis was performed using the Delft3D hydro model (tide tools) to obtain the tidal harmonic constituents. The tidal analysis results were used to identify tidal constituents, specifically focusing on the M2 and M4 components. Seven significant constituents were obtained and used in comparison with a previous study within the Damietta Harbor area. The significant components (M2, S2, K1, O1, N2, K2, and M4) had amplitudes of 0.098, 0.061, 0.022, 0.014, 0.017, 0.012, and 0.001 m, respectively, for the radar sensor, and the results were approximately similar for the pressure sensor. M2 and S2 components had the highest amplitudes for both sensors. The tidal regime ratio was calculated using the Form Factor equation, resulting in a value of 0.22, which indicates that the tide cycle in this area is semidiurnal. Based on the findings of the computations and analysis, the amplitudes of the tidal datums of Mean High-Water Spring, Mean Low Water Springs, Mean High Water Neap, Mean Low Water Neap, Mean Low Water Neap, Highest High-Water Level, and Lowest Low-Water Level were 0.159 m, -0.159 m, 0.037 m, -0.037 m, 0.195 m, and -0.195 m respectively. This information can be used to update all nautical charts for dredging and all survey operations in the harbour.
