Abstract
Both catastrophe theory and the Hopf bifurcation theorem can be applied to the study of the stability of synchronous generators connected to power systems, when subjected to small disturbances. The Hopf bifurcation theorem can be used to determine the stability of the produced orbits of oscillation which indicate the stability state of the synchronous machine, here treated first as a second order problem and then by including the governor response. Catastrophe theory usefully visualises the stability problem by deriving the approp riate catastrophe manifold. In this paper this is shown to be a "butterfly" manifold, after taking into account the described conditions.
