Abstract

An easy and flexible optical method for simultaneous measurements of sizes and velocities of spray droplets has been developed. The method is based on the Doppler-Mei combination technique. Emphasis is focused on the establishment of a correction procecure of the errors which inevitably occur in measuring results of droplet size distributions using laser beam optical systems. Also a statistical data reduction technique to derive the correlation between size and velocity of spray droplets has been developed. The method has been applied for measurements of velocity and size distributions of droplets of a confined spray injectec from an ultrasonic acomizer. Also counterpart measurements of droplet size distribution have been carried out using the magnesium oxide method. Experimental results show that droplet size distribution obtained by this method in diameter range between 15 and 80um. It was also found that velocities of droplets are distributed over a wide range regardless of their sizes.
